Embark on a Gaming Odyssey: Xbox Handheld Rumors Resurface
The gaming world is abuzz with rumors of a potential Xbox handheld device. While Microsoft has never confirmed the existence of such a project, recent comments from Xbox boss Phil Spencer have reignited the rumor mill.
At the 2024 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Spencer spoke with Polygon’s Chris Plante about his experiences with PC gaming handhelds. He expressed his desire to make devices like the Lenovo Legion Go feel “more like an Xbox.” This sparked speculation about a possible Xbox handheld in the works.
“What should we build that will find new players?” Spencer asked. “That will allow people to play at times when they couldn’t go play [in the past]?”
Spencer also shared his frustrations with the lack of cross-saves for games like Fallout 76 on the Legion Go. He revealed that the Xbox Hardware team is considering “different hardware form factors,” which could hint at a future Xbox handheld.
The Xbox boss praised innovators like Valve, Lenovo, and Asus for pushing the boundaries of handheld gaming. “I like the fact that they went out and innovated in a new form factor,” Spencer said. “And I will say that when I’m playing on those devices, it almost feels more like a console than a PC — nine times out of 10.”
Spencer’s comments have sparked hope that we might see more optimizations for handheld form factors in the future on Windows. While there’s no official word on a Microsoft Xbox handheld, gamers can only speculate about what the future might hold.
A potential Xbox handheld device could change the gaming landscape.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for Xbox handheld gaming. One thing is certain, though: the gaming world is eagerly awaiting any developments in this space.
The freedom to game anywhere, anytime is an enticing prospect.
