The world of handheld PC gaming is rapidly expanding, and with it, the demand for high-performance storage solutions. In response, IRDM, a gaming sub-brand of Wilk Electronik SA, has unveiled its Pro Nano SSD, boasting unprecedented speeds of up to 7,300MB/s (7.3GB/s) sequential reads and 6,000MB/s (6GB/s) sequential writes.

Gaming on-the-go

This M.2 2230 form factor SSD is designed specifically for handheld gaming consoles, including the Steam Deck, Lenovo’s Legion Go, and MSI’s Claw. With its PCIe 4.0 x4 drive, the IRDM Pro Nano SSD promises to revolutionize the gaming experience with lightning-fast game and application loading, enhancing overall system smoothness.

“Such performance enables lightning-fast game and application loading, enhancing overall system smoothness. Both gamers and professionals will appreciate reduced downtime and faster data processing, crucial when working with large files and demanding applications,” IRDM says.

While the Steam Deck utilizes PCIe 3.0 x4 for the M.2 storage slot, the IRDM Pro Nano SSD’s backwards compatibility ensures seamless integration. Moreover, IRDM is not just targeting gaming handhelds, but also gaming laptops.

Gaming on the go

“SSD IRDM Pro Nano is more than just a drive - it’s a thoughtful response to the growing needs of the mobile device market, where speed, small size, and reliability are crucial,” says Wiesław Wilk, CEO of Wilk Elektronik SA. “The drive is designed with mobile gamers in mind, who do not accept compromises between performance and mobility of their devices.”

The performance benefits of a faster M.2 2230 SSD depend on the platform and usage. Nevertheless, the IRDM Pro Nano SSD sets a new benchmark for handheld gaming storage, pushing the industry to innovate and drive down prices.

The future of handheld gaming

IRDM plans to offer the Pro Nano SSD in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, although pricing and availability have not been disclosed. As the handheld gaming market continues to evolve, one thing is certain - the need for high-performance storage solutions will only continue to grow.
