The gaming industry is facing a significant slump, with AMD, a leading chipmaker for gaming consoles and graphics cards, reporting a 48% year-over-year drop in gaming revenue for Q1. This decline is a stark indicator of the current state of the gaming market.
Weak Demand and Inventory Issues
According to AMD’s Q1 earnings report, gaming revenue reached only $922 million, a substantial decrease from the previous year. This decline is not limited to AMD, as Sony and Microsoft have also reported lower sales of their gaming consoles. The decrease in demand is attributed to consumers holding off on buying gaming consoles and graphics cards.
“If you look at the gaming, the demand has been quite weak. That’s quite well known, and also their inventory level,” said CFO Jean Hu during an earnings call.
Hu’s statement suggests that the company expects the second half of the year to be even weaker than the first half, which is a concerning trend for the gaming industry.
Impact on Console Sales
The decline in gaming revenue is not limited to AMD. Sony has reduced its projections for PS5 sales, citing a gradual decline in unit sales from next fiscal year onwards. Microsoft has also reported a 31% year-over-year drop in Xbox hardware revenue, driven by lower volume of consoles sold.

Despite the current slump, there is hope on the horizon. A refresh of new GPUs and consoles in the coming quarters, including the rumored PS5 Pro, could spark new sales and revive the gaming industry.
