The ROG Ally X: A Handheld Gaming PC That’s a Cut Above
I recently had the chance to get my hands on the ROG Ally X, the latest handheld gaming PC from Asus, and I must say, it’s a significant improvement over its predecessor. While I wasn’t allowed to power it on or play any games, I was able to get a feel for the device’s design and ergonomics, and I’m pleased to report that it’s a much more comfortable handheld to hold.
The ROG Ally X: a sleek and comfortable handheld gaming PC
The first thing I noticed about the ROG Ally X is its smooth, curved design. Gone are the bumpy corners and sharp edges of the original ROG Ally, replaced by a sleek and ergonomic shape that fits comfortably in the hand. The back of the device features a smooth, curved grip that makes it easy to hold, and the buttons have been redesigned to be more accessible and less obtrusive.
One of the biggest improvements over the original ROG Ally is the addition of a larger battery. While I wasn’t able to test the battery life, Asus claims it will last up to eight hours, which is a significant improvement over the original’s four to five hours. The device itself is slightly thicker and heavier than the original, but it doesn’t feel unwieldy or uncomfortable to hold.
The face buttons have been redesigned to be less rattly, and the joysticks now feature a nice, tacky rubber coating. The D-pad has been improved, with eight-way indicators and a slightly floatier feel. The triggers have a bit more throw, and the device still features RGB LED ring lights around the sticks.
Overall, I’m impressed with the ROG Ally X. While I wasn’t able to test its gaming performance, the device’s comfort and ergonomics are a significant improvement over the original. If Asus can deliver on its promises of improved battery life and performance, the ROG Ally X could be a serious contender in the handheld gaming PC market.
