Portable Gaming is Back and Better Than Ever
The rumors of Sony bringing back the PSP handheld console have got me excited, and I’m not alone. The Switch 2 and the increasing number of PC devices are all contributing to the resurgence of portable gaming. As someone who’s been a fan of portable consoles since my first Game Boy Color, I’m thrilled to see this trend taking off.
My love affair with portable gaming began with my Game Boy Color, which I received as a gift. I loved the freedom to play games on the go, and my parents found it harder to complain about my gaming habits. It was like having a mobile phone, but instead of making calls, I was playing games.
Growing up, I didn’t have the luxury of owning multiple consoles, so I had to make do with my Game Boy Color. I envied my friends who had a Game Gear or a Lynx, but I was happy with my PlayStation device. The graphics were better, and I didn’t mind the limited game selection.
Fast forward to the PSP and PS Vita era, and I was in portable gaming heaven. However, by the time the 3DS and PS Vita came around, it seemed like portable consoles were falling out of favor. Many casual gamers didn’t see the point of carrying a separate device when they had a phone that could do everything.
But then Nintendo came along with the Switch, and it changed the game. The Switch’s success led to the creation of the Steam Deck, and now we have a plethora of similar devices from Asus ROG Ally and others. Rumors of Xbox making a hybrid portable console for the next gen and Sony bringing back the PSP have me excited for the future of portable gaming.
My only concern is that modern portable games are not designed specifically for handheld mode. They’re just regular home games that happen to work on a portable device. I’d love to see Nintendo and Sony create games that are made specifically for portable gaming, like they used to be. They might be smaller indie titles, but I’d appreciate the effort.
Overall, I’m thrilled to welcome back portable consoles from every company and ask, why did they ever go away?
