Steam Deck Continues to Impress with Latest Update
The Steam Deck has won over the hearts of gamers worldwide with its incredible ability to power through demanding PC games in a portable and competent fashion. Valve’s consistent software support has been a significant contributor to this success, and the latest preview update, SteamOS 3.6.0, is no exception.
Overclocking Controls and More
One of the most exciting features of this update is the addition of overclocking controls to the Steam Deck LCD version. This means that users can now squeeze out even more performance from their hardware, although it’s essential to keep in mind that cooling considerations are still crucial for this tightly-packed unit. Interestingly, this feature was already available on the newer OLED model, which has some internal differences compared to the LCD Steam Deck.
With ASUS recently announcing updates to its ROG Ally X, the Steam Deck is bolstering up in the face of competition. However, the ROG Ally X doesn’t have an OLED display and only minor improvements, so any further tweaks the existing Steam Deck can usher out should keep it very competitive still.
Improved Bluetooth Connectivity and More
Valve has also included a range of other updates alongside the overclocking support in SteamOS 3.6.0 Preview. Improved Bluetooth connectivity and better support for other products like Apple AirPods will undoubtedly enhance the user experience. An update to Mesa 24.1 for the graphics driver brings improvements to the Steam UI as well.
Steam Deck Dock Updates
The Steam Deck Dock has also received some updates, mainly in its HDMI CEC capabilities, such as waking the TV. While these improvements may seem minor, they can often be major for everyday usability for those using the dock in this fashion. Nothing spoils the fun faster than connection and compatibility issues with hardware.
Miscellaneous Improvements
There are also other miscellaneous improvements sprinkled within this update, addressing issues that may not be groundbreaking but are lightly influential in the background of everyday gaming. Items such as improved microSD usage, improved speed of OS updates, and desktop mode fixes add to the package of improvements.
Known Issues
The only known issue mentioned is the crashing of the sound driver, which can be triggered by frequent session switches. A simple system reboot is the current remedy until the issue is addressed in a future update.
The Steam Deck continues to impress with its latest update.
While we await a future Steam Deck 2, these consistent updates will keep users happy and the Steam Deck entrenched in its lead position for handhelds.
‘The Steam Deck has consistently shown that it’s a force to be reckoned with in the handheld gaming market, and with updates like this, it’s clear that Valve is committed to keeping it that way.’
