Ghost of Tsushima: A Handheld Gaming Odyssey Cut Short

As a gamer on-the-go, I was thrilled to hear that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut was finally making its way to the Steam Deck. The prospect of exploring feudal Japan on a handheld device was too enticing to resist. However, my excitement was short-lived, as I soon discovered that the game’s online multiplayer mode would not be available on the Steam Deck.

The developers have confirmed that the single-player experience, including the Iki Island expansion, can be enjoyed on the Steam Deck and similar handheld gaming PCs. This is a welcome relief, but it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment at the omission of the Legends co-op multiplayer mode.

The reason behind this limitation lies in the game’s integration with the PlayStation Network (PSN). The new PlayStation Overlay, which hooks into the PSN for features like Friends, Trophies, and more, is the culprit behind the online mode’s incompatibility with the Steam Deck. It’s a shame, as the co-op multiplayer mode was one of the most exciting aspects of the game.

The PlayStation Overlay: A game-changer for PSN integration

While it’s disheartening to see the online mode restricted, I remain hopeful that Valve will eventually update Proton to support the necessary features. After all, we’ve seen similar issues resolved in the past. For now, I’ll have to content myself with the single-player experience, which I’m sure will still be an absolute blast.

Ghost of Tsushima: A stunning game, even without online multiplayer

In the meantime, I’ll be keeping a close eye on Valve’s updates, hoping that they’ll soon resolve the issues preventing the online mode from working on the Steam Deck. Until then, I’ll be enjoying the single-player experience, and dreaming of the day when I can team up with friends to take on the Mongol hordes.
