Embark on a Gaming Odyssey: Asus ROG Ally X, the Steam Deck Rival

The handheld gaming PC market just got a whole lot more interesting with the announcement of the Asus ROG Ally X, a revamped version of its predecessor featuring spec and design upgrades as per user feedback. This $800 handheld is set for release in late July and is available for preorder exclusively at Best Buy.

A new challenger has entered the fray

The ROG Ally X is technically a second iteration of the ROG Ally, not a full-on sequel. It retains its seven-inch 1080p display, AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, AMD Radeon GPU, and Windows 11 operating system. However, it’s now configurable with up to 24GB of RAM (up from 16GB) and 1TB of SSD storage (up from 512GB), and it’s got a redesigned motherboard with a M.2 2280 SSD slot that makes it easier to add more space yourself.

Upgraded specs for a smoother gaming experience

Its battery capacity has also been doubled to 80Wh, yet it’s only 0.15 pounds heavier than the first ROG Ally (at 1.49 pounds total). The design department has also seen some significant changes, with rounded-off corners, swapped XG Mobile port for two USB-C ports, and rearranged inputs to make everything a bit more comfortable to handle. The new black colorway is also a nice touch.

A sleek new design

The ROG Ally X is set to release on July 22, and with its upgraded specs and design, it’s definitely a contender in the handheld gaming PC market. Will it be able to take on the Steam Deck? Only time will tell.
